// Paraphernalia Act

22/8/2003

"The Home Office has announced that from August 1st, 2003 it will no longer be an offence for doctors, pharmacists and drug workers to supply five types of drug paraphernalia to drug users. The move is designed to help users avoid health risks such as dissolving drugs in dirty water, or injecting traces of dirt."

"It is currently illegal to supply items like filters, sterile water and swabs which can be used to clean injecting sites, dissolve the drug hygienically and filter out impurities. The law change will cover these items, and sachets of citric acid which are used to dissolve heroin before injection."

"Caroline Flint said, 'Out top priority is to get drug users off the drugs that cause them so much harm to themselves and our communities, but we need to be realistic that, for some drug users, that will not happen overnight, and we need to help them reduce the amount of harm that they do to themselves and others'."

"The change in law was recommended by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, which advises ministers on measures to prevent and minimise drug abuse."

As well as supplying a comprehensive range of harm reduction packs and sharps containers Frontier also offer a number of added services to assist customers in the day to day running of needle exchange schemes:

Trials - Frontier Medical Products are committed to ensuring that Sharpsafe Exchange products remain pre-eminent in terms of quality and design and as such, Frontier are always keen to work with Harm Reduction and Needle Exchange Co-ordinators in order to trial and evaluate Sharpsafe Exchange products.

Area Sales Managers liaise closely with clinicians to determine the duration and scope of the trial and provide training where required.

Pharmacy Training Days - Frontier can assist with projects such as pharmacy training days etc. We can produce posters to advertise the day and the Needle Exchange Sales Manager will, if required, attend to take part in discussions or answer any questions that may arise. We can also produce information packs for distribution at training days, if required.

In Service Training - Comprehensive training in the safe and appropriate use of sharps containers and pack components to staff throughout the organization. Training can be customised to meet individual trust /exchange requirements.

Frontier can provide training packs as required for in-house training or as 'refresher information' for pharmacists/exchange workers.

Factory Visits - Frontier Medical Products are located in Blackwood in the green valleys of South Wales. We can offer guided tours of our manufacturing facility to highlight the processes involved in producing Sharpsafe Exchange products.

Supporting Literature - Frontier have an in-house graphic design facility which is able to professionally and efficiently produce supporting literature either for inclusion as information flyers inside packs or as posters for display at exchange premises.

Special Printing - Due to the way in which the containers are manufactured we are one of the only suppliers who are able to print messages or telephone numbers directly on to the container. A minimum order quantity applies for this service.
